Free lecture on UK’s biggest smart grid project

22. February 2013

On March 4, Northumbria University, Newcastle, hosts a lecture on smart grids by Jon Bird, Head of Sustainability - Northern Powergrid. The lecture covers the UK's biggest smart grid project and the move towards a low carbon economy.

Since end of November 2010, CE Electric and its partners have been trialling smart grid solutions on the higher voltage networks within the electricity grid. They have also been creating meaningfully sized clusters of smart-enabled homes to give customers more flexibility over the way they use and generate electricity. 14,000 homes and businesses are involved in this £54 million project helping customers to reduce their energy costs and carbon emissions. Results may help the network companies make sure the electricity networks can handle the mass introduction of solar panels, electric cars and other greener technology.
